Hi all, here is a few shots of the Violet Helleborines (Epipactis purpurata) I saw at the weekend. I also noted an interesting species in the wood which had variegated leaves!
Hi David, small world this. I live in Howick Village, Northumberland, owned by the real Earl Grey! Or Lord Howick as he is now referred to. Google Howick Hall and you'll get the drift. Anyway I found some BL Helleborines, Birds Nest Orchids, Northern Marsh and Common Spotted Orchid plus hybrids all in a small area on the lords estate this year...Have you had Lindisfarne Helleborine? Its only half an hour from me and I keep missing them!!!!
Dave I think you might be right about the BL Helleborines. I thought they looked a bit different from ones Ive seen previously. I was wondering if I had discovered some Young's!
Oh and you wont be disappointed at Lindisfarne ( Holy Island), the orchids are at the Snook a fantastic duneland area. There is other wildlife to be seen in the area at that time too with Dark Green Frits and Grayling in the dunes plus waders and seabirds off shore. The mudflats at that time of year have lots of full summer Grey Plovers and Barwits too...
Burnt tip Orchid Fly Orchid Frog Orchid As I had the week off from University and work commitments, I made a quick trip to Derbyshire to check out a number of Orchid sites. Parking my car not far from the first site near Cromford I was soon climbing the steep hillside to get into the quarry. In the quarry bottom, I found straight the way a good number of Fly and Frog Orchids . Counting the Orchids there must have been thirty Frog Orchids in a small area of the quarry bottom and at least forty Fly Orchids in the surrounding area. As you would expect I took a good number of photos of these good looking Orchids. Although this trip was to look for Orchids, I did note that the quarry had three singing Redstarts, which would have been fantastic for my home county of Leicestershire! Moving up to the higher section of the quarry I found another twenty Fly Orchids, five Frog Orchids and a couple of Common Twayblades. Driving up the hill from the last site, I reached the next site within minut
