Violet Helleborines at Great Merrible Wood.

Hi all, here is a few shots of the Violet Helleborines (Epipactis purpurata) I saw at the weekend. I also noted an interesting species in the wood which had variegated leaves!

Hi David, small world this. I live in Howick Village, Northumberland, owned by the real Earl Grey! Or Lord Howick as he is now referred to. Google Howick Hall and you'll get the drift. Anyway I found some BL Helleborines, Birds Nest Orchids, Northern Marsh and Common Spotted Orchid plus hybrids all in a small area on the lords estate this year...Have you had Lindisfarne Helleborine? Its only half an hour from me and I keep missing them!!!!

Dave I think you might be right about the BL Helleborines. I thought they looked a bit different from ones Ive seen previously. I was wondering if I had discovered some Young's!

Oh and you wont be disappointed at Lindisfarne ( Holy Island), the orchids are at the Snook a fantastic duneland area. There is other wildlife to be seen in the area at that time too with Dark Green Frits and Grayling in the dunes plus waders and seabirds off shore. The mudflats at that time of year have lots of full summer Grey Plovers and Barwits too...
