City Challenge update: Spotted Redshank!! 3rd May 2011.

Here is the latest update on the city year list: Spotted Redshank OMFL!! 
With the morning off before work in the afternoon, I checked out the usual Soar Valley sites. Sightings included the Temminck's Stint and Wood Sandpiper at Wanlip Meadows LRWT and a mobile Black Tern at Watermead CP North.
It wasn't until I got to Birstall Meadows that I struck gold, when I found a Spotted Redshank feeding on the floods! GET IN! 103 for the city year list!
As usual I sent a few texts around and phoned John Hague about the bird.
This was only the second time I had seen Spotted Redshank down the Soar Valley, so really a bit of mega for the site!
With a few more easy ticks to come, I am now targeting to get at least 115 species for my year list!?!

Tawny Owl, Spotted Flycatcher, Little Egret, Brambling,Water Rail,one possibly two rarities and maybe Little Owl!?!

Ring-billed Gull OMFL!!!

Meeting up with Neil Hagley this afternoon at Shawell Balancing Lake almost the first gull I looked at was an Adult Ring-Billed Gull . Just to make sure I wasn't hallucinating I ask Neil to have a look at this gull in my scope and he came to the same conclusion. GET IN!!! So over the next half an hour we ticked off all the salient features of the bird and then phoned out the news. As this was probably only the sixth record for Leicestershire and Rutland as you can imagine I took quite a few digishots of the gull. Joined later by the Groby crew (Allen, Andy F and Paul) just before the Ring-billed Gull flew off towards the tip, it wasn't long before the group picked at least 3 Yellow-legged Gulls and 3 Caspian Gulls (2 Adults and 1 2nd-winter bird) in the large gull flock.
